My father died after a decade-long struggle with cancer. I was forced to think more deeply about integrative health. During that time, I started practicing Reiki.
Reiki is a spiritual practice. It’s not a religion. There’s no dogma. It doesn't require you to "believe."
My teacher is Pamela Miles, an international Reiki master practicing since 1986, and the foremost Medical Reiki expert. Pamela taught me to practice both First Degree and Second Degree Reiki, and imparted some of her vast medical knowledge and research in her Reiki in Medicine intensive.
Since being initiated in 2015, I have practiced Reiki daily. With daily practice, I know there is something I can do every day to feel better.
The practice is simple. Hands are placed on different parts of the body of a fully-clothed participant. The placement of hands elicits the body's self-healing response. But something also seems to be happening on a deeper level.
What is that "something?" When I practice on myself, I feel "held." Afterwards, I feel a kind of peace, and clarity.
Medical care, complementary and alternative care, and self-care all contribute to our well-being. As my Reiki teacher once said, "Cure isn't always an option, but healing is always possible."
